4 июля в 15:30 в 107 БК состоится лекция «Simple solutions to complex problems in biology», организованная Центром исследований молекулярных механизмов старения и возрастных заболеваний МФТИ.

Лектор — Алексей Онуфриев (Alexey Onufriev), выпускник ФФХБ (ныне ФЭФМ) 1991 года, руководитель лаборатории теоретической и вычислительной молекулярной биофизики и профессор Политехнического университета Виргинии в США.

In this lecture the very simple theoretical and computational approaches will be presented that may be robust enough to provide insights into complex phenomena that involve bio-macromolecules. Some methodological aspects of modeling water in atomistic simulations will be discussed. These points will be exemplified with two recent research projects of Alexey’s group:

  • Computational identification of pathways of ligand migration in myoglobin;
This work shows that the mechanisms of small non-polar molecules such as O2 or CO travelling from the outside of the protein to the deeply buried binding site in myoglobin can be addressed by conceptually simple computational means.

  • How is the nucleosome stability modulated.
The primary level of DNA compaction in living cells is the nucleosome. Modulation of the nucleosome's stability is one of the key aspects of chromatin regulation, which in turn is vital for the fundamental cellular processes such as DNA replication, repair, transcription, and epigenetic inheritance. Yet, exactly how this modulation is accomplished in nature remains unclear. Research done by Alexey’s group shows that according to the model based on basic electrostatics the alteration of the nucleosome core charge can be responsible for this process. The latest results of a comprehensive study of all possible charge-altering post-translational modifications (acetylations and phosphorylations) in the nucleosomal core will be presented.
