The Times Higher Education rankings have announced the top 300 universities in computer science. The list features MIPT at number 67, as well as two other Russian higher education institutions — Lomonosov Moscow State University, at place 60, and ITMO University, which took place 76.
Times Higher Education subject rankings are published annually. Among the subject areas is computer science. Just like the general rankings of world’s leading universities, their subject-specific counterparts are based on a list of 13 performance indicators broken up into five groups: teaching, research, citations, international outlook, and industry income. A complete description of the methodology is available on the Times Higher Education website.Nikolay Kudryavtsev, the rector of MIPT, comments: “Although it was not that long ago — a mere 10 years’ time from now — that MIPT introduced study programs in computer science, IT proved to be one of the key areas for us. This is evidenced by the number of large companies started or developed by our alumni. Among them are ABBYY, Acronis, Veeam Software, and others. At the state examination in informatics, our first-year students doing applied mathematics and informatics got an average score of 97.7 out of 100 — counting the bonus scores of student competition winners and finalists — which is even better than last year. For two straight years, our team hits the podium in the ACM International Collegiate Programming Contest, taking gold in 2016 and silver in 2017. Thanks to the 5-100 program, MIPT has opened new labs doing applied research in machine intelligence, advanced combinatorics, and data analysis. All of this points to the success of MIPT in the field of computer science, which is now reflected in the world university rankings.”
