    Laboratory of High-Resolution Infrared Spectroscopy of Planetary Atmospheres

    About the laboratory

    After winning a mega-grant contest held by the Government of the Russian Federation (at the second stage of mega-grants), the laboratory was created in October 2011 at the MIPT Department of Problems of Physics and Energetics, which has a partnership with the Space Research Institute of the RAS. The activity of the laboratory is very important in terms of applied significance. The laboratory will directly participate in the carrying out of orders from the Russian Federal Space Agency on the development of brand new onboard equipment, while its students and postgraduates will bring their qualifications and expertise to the space industry. One very important aspect of the laboratory’s activity is the encouragement of international cooperation that plays a critical part in fundamental space research. The extension of the cooperation will aid in increasing the general reputation of MIPT’sscientific activity. Among the employees, there are three doctors of sciences, ten candidates of sciences, four postgraduates, and six students.


    Field of research


    Below you will find some of the works completed by the laboratory in 2011 that illustrate its various research endeavors. After analyzing data gathered in observations of the Martian atmosphere, a search for methane was carried out, and its atmospheric content was close to expected values. Upper limits for ethane and SO2 were also obtained. Gravity values were researched based on variations in emission of molecular oxygen in the OMEGA experiment. Numerical modeling of microphysics processes in the Martian aerosol was conducted. Observations with the Rusalka spectrometer onboard the ISS continueto be aimed at elaboration in techniques for measuringgreenhouse gas content in the Earth’s atmosphere. A system to monitor the ozone content in the Earth’s atmosphere is currently in development: "Ozonometer-TM" (for installation onboard the four spacecraft included in the Ionosphere group) and "Ozonometer-Z" (for the Sonde spacecraft that forms a second orbital Ionosonde group along with the Ionosphere spacecraft).



    The laboratory is set to carry out the following tasks in the near future:

    Conduct research on the atmospheres of the planets of the solar system using space vehicles and ground observations with methods of high-resolution spectroscopy in the ultraviolet, visible, and infrared ranges of spectrum.

    Develop advanced onboard spectroscopic instrumentation for the sounding of planetary atmospheres with space vehicles.

    Numerical modeling of planetary climates and of planetary atmosphere evolution using high-performance supercomputer systems and three-dimensional models of general circulation. 

    Development of an ultra-high resolution heterodyne spectrometer.

    Dryad space experiment. The task is to elaborate afield recording procedure of high-resolution spectra and recovery of concentration of greenhouse gases.
