Mass media (i.e.the press, the radio and television) play an important part in the life of society. They inform, educate and entertain people. They also influence the way people look at the world and make them change their views. In other words, mass media mould public opinion.
Millions of people in their spare time watch TV and listen to the radio. The radio is turned on creating a permanent background noise. It does not interfere with your activities. You can listen to the radio while doing some work about the house, reading a book or driving a car. On the radio one can hear music, plays, news, various commentary and discussions.
Modern television offers the viewers a lot of programs on different channels. In eddition to regular newscasts you can see plays and films, operas and ballets, and watch all kinds of contests, quizzes, and sporting events. You can also get a lot of useful information on the educational channel. A good serial (perhaps, a detective story or a screen version of a classical novel) can keep the whole family in front of the telly for days, and don’t we spend hours and hours watching our favourite football or hockey team in an important international event?
There is a lot of advertising on our radio and TV. To advertise their goods commercial firms buy TV and radio time. So much of the radio and TV time is taken by advertisements, probably about 15 minutes of each hour.
Television most definitely plays a very important part in people’s lives. But is this a good or a bad one? Haven’t we become lazier because of television? Don’t we go out less often than we used to? Don’t we read less? Many children spend too much time in front of the telly! Even little kids stay up as long as the adults to watch things that aren’t good for children at all! People who make up TV programs sometimes forget there are children in the viewers’ families.
Some people consider watching TV to be a waste of time, others like it very much. There are many programs that leave much to be desired, but on the whole television does us a lot of good.
